CHECK OUT OUR NEW 2010 SOCIAL MEDIA TRAINING PROGRAMME!
I attended a social media seminar run by Red Foundation in Birmingham. The session dealt with a complex subject in a readily understandable way, with minimum amounts of 'tech speak'. The session was excellent and seemed very 'fresh' compared to some other training I have attended. It was also informative, thought-provoking and interactive ie all the hallmarks of quality training.Eileen Fielding, Dudley CVS
Communicating Using Social Media - a one day workshop with Red Foundation and the NAVCA ICT Champions
Do you want to find new ways to communicate with the groups you work with? Would you like to try out different ways to reach your volunteers? Have you heard of social media or read about Facebook and Twitter, but not known how to apply them in development of local organisations and volunteer groups?
If you provide support and advice in a volunteer centre or you’re a development worker in a local support organisation helping small groups then this workshop is for YOU!
There’s a lot of talk about ‘social media’, some hype about how useful it is and a seemingly endless and growing list of social networking websites to try out. Good use of social media can offer ways to strengthen how development workers work with local groups, how organisations reach volunteers, or help communities campaign more effectively. Not considering use of this technology could mean organisations and volunteer centres miss out on its use to support development and help volunteer led projects and groups.
- Help you place social media in the context of your community development work role
- Consider guidelines for responsible use of social media websites
- Give you knowledge about a wide range of current social media tools available
- Feature a practical hands-on social media surgery to help build confidence in use of social media websites and show how you can help local groups benefit from them to
Places for this full day workshop are subsidised at £35 per person; this includes lunch, workshop materials and social media resource guides.

Modernising Volunteering - our aims
Modernising Volunteering's role is to promote volunteering through helping
support providers guide third sector organisations towards engaging and
deploying a greater diversity of volunteers and in developing new
sustainable ways of working. We encourage recognition of the value of
volunteering and will help modernisation by building support resources and
developing new ways or working with and involving volunteers.
We will equip support providers with the skills, knowledge and tools needed
to help increase the quality, quantity and accessibility of volunteering
opportunities. With our partners, we will focus on four main areas:
overcoming barriers to volunteering; accessing non-financial support;
faith-based volunteering; and new forms of volunteer involvement..
What problems do we want to solve?
Existing research has identified some barriers to volunteering and how it needs to evolve for the 21st century. This research now needs to be converted into practical resources so that support providers can help frontline organisations attain an increase in the quality, quantity and accessibility of volunteering opportunities.
Red Foundation will be leading on a strand of work to explore how online
social networks can support volunteering and those that work with
volunteers, and will be developing the 'Volunteer Champions' concept
recommended in the Commission on the Future of Volunteering's Manifesto for
Change, published in 2008.
