City of Westminster launches its first Volunteering Strategy
The Westminster City Partnership (WCP) launched its first city wide Volunteering Strategy last month as part of national Volunteer's Week.
The ambitious eight year Strategy aims to increase the number of people volunteering, to improve the capacity of those that work with and involve volunteers, and to improve the overall co-ordination of volunteering in the City. There are also cross-cutting objectives to target activity at local neighbourhoods and to promote equality, diversity and community cohesion through volunteering, reflecting on key priorities for the City Partnership.
This is the first city wide Volunteering Strategy for this key London borough, and it was developed through a partnership that included the City Council, the PCT, police, businesses and key representatives from the voluntary and community sector, including the local Volunteer Centre.
The production of the strategy was led by Red Foundation, commissioned on behalf of WCP by Westminster City Council. Their head of policy John Dimmer said ‘Red Foundation demonstrated commitment, passion and extensive knowledge of the subject area, bringing a range of expertise to the strategy’s development and remaining flexible and helpful throughout the development process. Their invaluable contribution has enabled us to produce a strategy which has been fully endorsed by the City Partnership and which sets out an exciting agenda for volunteering in Westminster for the next eight years.’
Red Foundation’s managing director Jamie Thomas said ‘This was an exciting project to work on. Westminster is a key London borough and we believe that the resulting strategy will enable the LSP to effect a major impact on volunteering in the area over the next eight years. As far as we are aware, this is one of the most comprehensive and ambitious local volunteering strategies produced so far and could well serve as an exemplar for other LSPs’ looking to increase and develop volunteering in their areas.’
